EKOenergy

EKOenergy is a global non-profit ecolabel for renewable electricity and gas that guarantees clean energy fulfils additional sustainability criteria and raises funds for new renewable energy projects in developing countries.

EKOenergy can be combined with all types of sourcing , such as Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

How EKOenergy works

EKOenergy goes one step further than directives and government regulations in minimising the environmental impact of renewables and boosting their social co-benefits.

Renewable electricity

The electricity sold with EKOenergy:

  • Comes from renewable sources, including hydro, wind, solar, bio or geothermal energy.
  • Is produced in installations located outside protected nature areas and important bird areas.
  • Follows strict sustainability requirements for hydropower production, such as safeguarding a continuous water flow, reducing impact to fish migration, and leaving suitable habitats for aquatic species.
  • Contributes to EKOenergy’s Environmental Fund, which supports environmental mitigation projects such as restoring rivers, building fish passages, and reviving spawning grounds.
  • Helps finance new renewable energy projects in low and middle-income countries through EKOenergy’s Climate Fund.

Biomethane

EKOenergy also certifies biomethane volumes to offer companies the most sustainable renewable gas option. Biomethane labelled with EKOenergy:

  • Is produced sustainably from organic waste, meaning residues that cannot be used elsewhere.
  • Contributes to EKOenergy's Climate Fund for renewable energy projects in low and middle-income countries.

Why purchase EKOenergy?

Raise the bar for energy procurement: EKOenergy brings additionality to Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) by multiplying the positive social and environmental outcomes of clean energy purchases.

Align with corporate standards: EKOenergy is recommended by multiple standards and organisations – including CDP, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the LEED certification system – to spur renewable energy development, show environmental leadership and comply with quality criteria.

Procure renewables globally: EKOenergy is available in more than 70 countries. The EKOenergy secretariat and its supporters can provide information in most local languages.
